Street homelessness is something that affects communities all across Europe, and by working together with others we can make big steps towards ending homelessness for good. Leicester’s Homelessness Charter is proud to be a lead partner within the European End Street Homelessness Campaign. The campaign is hosted by World Habitat, a Leicester-based international housing charity, and is a network of city-led campaigns from across Europe working to stop managing street homelessness, and start ending it once and for all.
In 2017, Leicester’s campaign was launched with over 200 local volunteers who took part in a Connections Week survey of people sleeping out. 92 people with recent experience of street homelessness were surveyed, to gain knowledge and insight about their circumstances and what housing solutions they needed. As a result, many people were offered support by agencies from within the city, and key agencies developed a deeper understanding of both the scale of street homelessness and the housing solutions needed.
It was acknowledged that better coordination and stronger partnership working could help to bring an end to street homelessness in the city, and out of this Leicester’s Homelessness Charter was born.
